🚀 The Mindful Black Journalism Initiative

Introducing the Mindful Black Journalism Initiative – offering mentorship and support to help Black journalists overcome burnout and trauma.

I’ve been making The Mindful Black Journalism podcast for about a year, interviewing Black journalists and scholars about the state of journalism and the realities of working as a journalist.

As this company nears its third year of operations, I’ve also encountered many journalists and news consumers who have an interest in the benefits of mindful journalism.

Twice As Good was founded on the fact that Black journalists disproportionately experience burnout and trauma as a result of working in news. To varying degrees, this problem is universal.

In fact, media burnout and overconsumption affects everyone, which I assume is why so many people have an interest in the benefits of mindful journalism.

So we’ve also been developing programs to serve newsroom journalists, content creators and news consumers of all backgrounds.

That’s why we launched the Mindful Black Journalism Initiative to offer programs like the MBJ Mentorship, in partnership with the Delmore "Buddy" Daye Learning Institute.

We’ll continue offering Mindful Black Journalism, but instead of a podcast and newsletter, we’re helping Black journalists and content creators more directly with programs to help them thrive and stay in the industry.

With that, the Mindful Black Journalism podcast and newsletter becomes the Mindful Black Journalism Initiative—an ongoing effort to support Black journalists with free or affordable programs.

At the same time, readers have been asking for more general commentary and reflections on journalism.

In August I sent a single-question survey asking which you like most: candid conversations about journalism and Black life, examples of mindful journalism in Black communities, or commentary and reflections on the state of journalism. More than half voted for commentary and reflections.

As a journalist I know how important is this debate about the lack of impartiality of traditional media and how much they serve the richest and most powerful, contributing to the increase in inequality and the strengthening of the extreme right throughout the world.

I'm most interested in what you have to say, where your mind is at and what you are learning and reflecting on. 🖖

So the podcast continues as Mindful Journalism, and the newsletter will now include more of what you’ve asked for.
